With global labor markets undergoing rapid transformations driven by technological advancements and shifting industry requirements, Malaysia is intensifying its focus on developing a highly skilled workforce to meet modern demands. As part of this strategic push, the country has taken steps to deepen regional cooperation in training, technical upskilling, and capacity building across the BIMP-EAGA sub-region, comprising Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
In pursuit of these goals, Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) participated in the 11th meeting of the BIMP-EAGA Socio-Cultural and Education Cluster held on September 1. Hosted by Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, the high-level session was attended by official delegates from all four member states. The meeting was chaired by Caroline Cleophas Joseph, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Sarawak’s Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, who also serves as the chairperson of the BIMP-EAGA Socio-Cultural Cluster. During the deliberations, delegates reviewed the implementation progress of ongoing programs and strategic initiatives under the cluster, while laying the groundwork for the upcoming BIMP-EAGA leadership summit scheduled for November.
Human resource development discussions centered on enhancing vocational training, technical skillsets, and overall labor capability. High priority was placed on shaping a workforce that is adaptable, highly competitive, and capable of navigating fast-evolving labor market dynamics. The BIMP-EAGA Socio-Cultural Cluster operates through three primary working groups: Human Resource Development, Socio-Cultural and Education, and Youth and Sports Development. KESUMA plays an active role in spearheading initiatives within the Human Resource Development Working Group. The ministry aims to broaden technical training opportunities, enhance knowledge exchange across member territories, and build future-ready talent. Malaysian authorities believe that as technology reshapes the nature of work, strengthening regional partnerships in skill development will significantly elevate the competitive edge and capabilities of the BIMP-EAGA workforce.
