To ensure sustainable energy security and expand the adoption of renewable energy, the government has announced a special incentive package for the installation of battery-equipped rooftop solar power systems. Under this newly introduced mechanism, consumers supplying surplus electricity generated from rooftop solar panels with battery storage to the national grid will receive a guaranteed tariff of Tk 10.50 per unit. The Power Division issued an official gazette notification on Tuesday regarding the scheme, which came into effect from September 1, 2026.
According to the gazette notification, the benchmark generation cost for battery-equipped rooftop solar electricity has been capped at a maximum of Tk 8 per unit, taking into account current market rates and tender prices received by the Power Division. Adding a 20 percent profit margin alongside an 11.25 percent premium onto this production cost, the purchase price for electricity supplied to the national grid has been fixed at Tk 10.50 per unit. However, if any consumer succeeds in installing the rooftop solar system at a cost lower than the government-set production benchmark, the saved expenditure will be retained as additional profit by that consumer.
Under the Net Metering Guidelines 2025, consumers who install battery-integrated rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027, and feed their surplus power into the national grid after self-consumption will qualify for this package. Qualifying consumers will receive the guaranteed incentive tariff of Tk 10.50 per unit for three years, until February 28, 2030. The notification specified that power distribution utilities will systematically maintain consumer data alongside records of electricity fed into the national transmission network. Payments covering both power value and incentive tariffs will be deposited directly into consumers' designated bank accounts every three months, with cash disbursement prohibited under all circumstances.
The special financial incentive will not apply to rooftop solar units installed after February 28, 2027. Furthermore, the gazette mandates that all components utilized in the solar power systems—including panels, batteries, inverters, and meters—must strictly comply with the technical standards established by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA). Consumers will receive relevant policy and technical guidance through the Power Division's One-Stop Service Centre, as well as designated offices of distribution utilities across district and upazila levels. The government expects this incentive package to play an instrumental role in expanding rooftop solar generation capacity nationwide, enhancing renewable energy's share in the national grid, and consolidating overall energy security.
