PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin
The government has formulated short-, medium-, and long-term strategic roadmaps to resolve the country's prevailing electricity and natural gas crunch, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Spokesperson Mahdi Amin announced on Monday.
Speaking to reporters following a high-level consultative meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and leaders of 21 apex trade associations and business bodies at the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Amin detailed plans to expand LNG import infrastructure and scale up domestic energy exploration.
Amin noted that the country's past reliance on two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) left it vulnerable, particularly after one was disabled by prolonged technical faults. While both terminals are now operational, the administration plans to add a third FSRU before 2028, with a long-term goal of increasing capacity to five units. Simultaneously, the government has undertaken a medium-term program to drill roughly 150 exploratory gas wells, which will be followed by a second phase targeting another 150 wells. Plans are also underway to construct land-based LNG terminals and reinforce the national gas grid.
On the power sector, the roadmap balances oil, gas, and coal-fired generation to reduce import dependence, while establishing solar and renewable energy as the cornerstone of future power generation. Amin emphasized that while resolving 16 years of accumulated systemic degradation will take time, the administration is committed to providing consistent policy backing, leaving private enterprise to drive industrial execution.
The meeting—titled "Challenges and Future Roadmap of Bangladesh's Power and Energy Sector"—was attended by Commerce and Industry Minister Khondokar Abdul Muktadir, Energy State Minister Onindya Islam Amit, Finance and Planning Adviser Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostakur Rahman, Invest Bangladesh Authority Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, along with heads of major trade bodies including FBCCI, BGMEA, BKMEA, ICC-B, and MCCI.
