Second meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs
The government is actively continuing necessary diplomatic and legal initiatives to extradite ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was informed on Thursday.
The government's stance was reiterated during the second meeting of the foreign affairs standing committee of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee Chairman Jaharat Adib Chowdhury presiding.
The update aligns with recent executive briefings regarding the repatriation of fugitive political figures. On Wednesday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam stated that authorities were pursuing all statutory procedures under domestic law and the bilateral extradition treaty to bring back convicted Awami League leaders abroad, confirming that formal extradition requests for Hasina have been placed through diplomatic channels.
Committee members also assessed the trajectory of the country's external relations, affirming that foreign policy must maintain a balanced posture centered on national interest under the government's "Bangladesh First" doctrine.
The meeting reviewed a detailed report on illegal overseas migration and human trafficking networks. Lawmakers observed that past procedural lapses and lax background checks had created structural complications that the current administration must navigate. The committee urged stringent document verification and recommended establishing an authentic, transparent recruitment pipeline through rigorously vetted overseas employment agencies.
Lawmakers were also briefed on the foreign ministry's newly launched Migration Wing, established to safeguard expatriate welfare and promote orderly migration pathways. To protect prospective migrant workers from unregulated middlemen and fraudulent agents, the committee advised rolling out extensive grassroots awareness programs on lawful overseas employment procedures.
In addition, the committee evaluated ongoing initiatives to address the protracted Rohingya refugee crisis and announced plans to conduct an on-site visit to the Cox's Bazar refugee camps in October.
The meeting was attended by committee members State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, Mohammad Amanullah Aman, S. K. Azizul Bari, A. B. M. Mosharraf Hossain, and Sanjida Islam. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir joined upon special invitation, alongside senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Parliament Secretariat.
