Water Resources Minister Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie
Minister for Water Resources Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie stated that the government has launched targeted nationwide initiatives to complete the unfinished vision of Begum Khaleda Zia in building a self-reliant Bangladesh.
He made the remarks on Friday morning while addressing as the chief guest at a fish finger release ceremony in the Rahmatkhali canal in Lakshmipur.
Highlighting the economic and ecological impact of water management, the minister noted that revitalizing riverine waterways will revitalize the rural economy regardless of partisan lines. He underscored that following the general elections, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman rolled out broad developmental initiatives, including a five-year campaign to plant 250 million trees nationwide and a comprehensive project to re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals over the next five years. Today's fish finger release forms an integral component of this broader ecological revival.
Invoking historical context, Annie recalled that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman envisioned an agrarian revolution through his pioneering nationwide canal-digging movements. The minister emphasized that restoring rural infrastructure is treated as a moral obligation tied directly to environmental sustainability. Turning to local concerns, he described the Rahmatkhali canal as the lifeline of Lakshmipur, noting that intensive hyacinth-clearing drives had restored water flow, paving the way for releasing fingerlings.
The event featured Lakshmipur Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tareq, Water Development Board Executive Engineer Nahid Uz-Zaman Khan, District Fisheries Officer Jasim Uddin, District BNP Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, and BFF Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy as special guests. Following the ceremony, the district fisheries department distributed fingerlings to 33 government and private institutions for pond stocking.
