Prime Minister's Advisor Mahdi Amin
The government is committed to facilitating international recognition, employment avenues, and higher educational pathways abroad for Bangladeshi architects, stated Mahdi Amin, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office. He affirmed that the administration places a premium on architectural education and professional practice, pledging comprehensive policy frameworks and infrastructural backing to empower young architects on the global stage.
Amin made the remarks as chief guest on Friday at the inaugural ceremony of the "Bangladesh Arch Summit 2026," organized by the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. He stated that development strategies and policies undertaken following the assumption of office by the new administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would usher in a significant transformation in the country's architectural and infrastructural landscape over the next five years.
Urging local architects to step forward to realize this vision and design world-class iconic structures, Amin highlighted the career prospects of emerging graduates. He noted that approximately 1,000 architectural graduates enter the workforce annually. To accommodate them, the government is initiating measures to expand domestic employment opportunities while easing access to master's and doctoral degrees overseas. He stressed the imperative of securing global accreditation for Bangladeshi architectural qualifications, enabling local professionals to compete for international design commissions directly from home.
To achieve this benchmark, the prime minister's advisor called upon the IAB, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) to collaborate closely on aligning national curricula with the international Canberra Accord framework. Addressing pedagogical standards, Amin affirmed that the government stands prepared to sanction additional faculty recruitment and budget allocations across public universities to modernize curricula, expand studio and laboratory infrastructure, and optimize student-faculty ratios. Chaired by IAB President Professor Sharif Shams Imon, the inaugural session was addressed by BAC Chairman Professor Md. Akhtar Hossain Khan, South African architect Kevin Bingham, North South University Professor M. Mahbubur Rahman, BRAC University Professor Fuad Hassan Mallick, and architects Mahmudul Anwar Riyaad and Professor Saiful Islam.
