The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has made it mandatory for motorcycle owners to install manual front number plates alongside existing rear digital plates by November 15, warning of legal action against non-compliance. The directive was issued through an urgent public notice on October 16.
According to the regulatory notice, while RFID-tagged retro-reflective plates are required on the rear under the Road Transport Act 2018 and Road Transport Rules 2022, displaying registration numbers on the front has been instituted to enhance traffic enforcement and automated surveillance. Initially, owners are required to install manual plates at their own initiative in strict accordance with prescribed standards.
As per official guidelines, the front plate must be fabricated from stainless steel or aluminum, featuring a plain white background with Bengali letters and numbers printed in black. Any ornamental styling or decorative alterations are strictly prohibited. For standard motorcycles other than scooters, the registration mark may be aligned in a single horizontal line.
BRTA has also specified distinct dimensions: for scooters, the plate must measure 200 mm in length and 100 mm in width, with characters standing at least 20 mm tall. For all other motorcycles, the dimensions must be 285 mm in length and 50 mm in width, maintaining the same minimum character height of 20 mm. The regulatory authority urged all motorcycle owners to adhere strictly to these technical specifications within the designated deadline.
