Mongla Sea Port has achieved remarkable growth in container and cargo handling during the first seven months of the 2025–26 fiscal year, surpassing last year’s record in just seven months. Officials attribute the surge to infrastructure upgrades, operational efficiency, and expanded commercial activities, signaling a stronger future role for the port in Bangladesh’s economy.
From July 2025 to January 2026, 31 foreign container ships called at the port, handling a total of 21,651 TEUs—an increase of nearly 79.19% compared to the previous fiscal year. Additionally, 515 foreign commercial vessels arrived, handling 8.266 million metric tons of cargo, reflecting a 25.03% growth over last year. Analysts say this growth not only indicates higher port utilization but also highlights Mongla Port’s rising importance in the country’s import-export flow.
The port has launched three new operational anchor berths—HP-1, HP-2, and HP-3—at the Hiron Point area. Successful trial operations with 16 ships of 9-meter draft have increased the port’s ability to handle larger vessels. These upgrades are expected to: Reduce ship waiting times Lower operational costs Expand transit and transshipment opportunities This positions Mongla Port as a more competitive regional hub.
Economists note that increased container handling will: Boost raw material imports for industries Strengthen export supply chains Reduce logistics costs and overall production expenses The port’s operations are expected to play a key role in the industrial and commercial growth of the southwestern region.
Mongla Port currently handles imports of food grains, clinker, fertilizers, coal, oil, automobiles, and machinery, while exporting fish, shrimp, jute and jute products, frozen foods, and various industrial and agricultural goods. This diverse cargo flow underlines the port’s growing significance in the country’s overall trade network. Experts emphasize that to maintain growth, the port must: Maintain navigability and enhance dredging operations, Improve rail and road connectivity, Implement digital port management systems, Attract private investment Statistics from just seven months indicate that Mongla Port is gradually becoming a major hub in Bangladesh’s commercial logistics network. With continued infrastructure development and policy support, it is expected to make an even greater contribution to national economic growth.
