The European Union (EU) has expressed hope that the newly elected Bangladesh government will carry forward the reform initiatives launched during the interim administration, with EU Ambassador Michael Miller highlighting judicial reforms, commercial courts and migration governance as key priorities.
Miller made the remarks on Monday after meeting Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."We expect judicial reforms to be implemented, commercial courts to be established and good governance in migration management to be ensured," the EU ambassador told reporters.
He said these issues are particularly important for unlocking the full potential of the EU-Bangladesh relationship.
Miller described the EU as Bangladesh's most reliable friend, largest trade partner and investor, a significant development partner and an important political ally for the newly elected government.
He said discussions covered all aspects of the bilateral relationship, including reforms, trade, humanitarian issues and migration.
The ambassador said a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Bangladesh and the EU is now in its final stages. "We hope to be in a position to sign this agreement with Bangladesh very soon," he said.
Miller also emphasized that respect for fundamental freedoms remains a critical element in the EU's engagement with Bangladesh.
The EU envoy expressed optimism about opening a new chapter in relations with Bangladesh and strengthening ties further under the new government.
Earlier on the same day, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen also held a separate meeting with the foreign minister and state minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
