Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) financed 18.69 MWp rooftop solar project at Akij Ceramics Ltd. in Trishal was inaugurated today, marking a major step in Bangladesh's industrial clean energy transition.
Mr. Ulrich Kleppmann, Head of Development Cooperation, German Embassy Dhaka, attended as the chief guest, alongside Mr. Michael Sumser-Hellstern, Director, KfW, Mr. Alamgir Morshed, Executive Director & CEO, IDCOL, and Mr. S. K. Bashir Uddin, Managing Director, Akij Bashir Group.
The BDT 101.47 crore project, of which approximately BDT 76.83 crore was financed by IDCOL, is expected to generate 19,500 MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce 14,626 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Of the total capacity, 10 MWp is already connected to the national grid through net metering.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Ulrich Kleppmann, Head of Development Cooperation, German Embassy Dhaka, commended the initiative, stating that the project exemplifies the strength of German-Bangladesh development cooperation. He emphasized that Germany remains a steadfast partner in supporting Bangladesh's climate action goals through investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Mr. Michael Sumser-Hellstern reaffirmed KfW's commitment, stating that the €60 million facility extended to IDCOL is driving impactful investments in industrial decarbonization.
Mr. Alamgir Morshed highlighted strong private sector demand, noting IDCOL has revised its target to finance 1,150 MWp of rooftop solar by 2030. To date, IDCOL has financed ~220 MWp, with a pipeline exceeding 200 MWp.
Mr. S. K. Bashir Uddin added that the project reinforces Akij Bashir Group's dedication to sustainability. The group has partnered with IDCOL on 11 solar projects totaling 67 MWp.
Following the inauguration, dignitaries toured the solar facility and factory premises.
