The income tax return submission period ends at midnight, but before the deadline expires, individual taxpayers can apply online to get a 90-day extension, the National Bureau of Revenue (NBR) has said.
The NBR has included a dedicate “Time Extension” option on its online return submission system, "E-Return," for individual taxpayers to use and avail a deadline extension of maximum 90 days starting 12am on Wednesday, it said in a statement.
The new option is easy, fast and transparent to use, it added. Inclusion of the option effectively means taxpayers can submit returns anytime in a year after stating "valid reasons."
On Tuesday, NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan told reporters that income taxpayers can submit returns throughout the year.
He, however, emphasised that taxpayers who file their returns early will receive "special benefits."
The taxpayers will have to submit a written application through the "Time Extension" option on the "E-Return" webpage before 12am on Wednesday, the NBR has said. They have to state “valid reasons” for requiring a time extension of maximum 90 days, it said.
In the application, they have to address the tax commissioner of their respective circle.
Those who are yet to register on the “E-Return” system, can avail the time extension after registering.
So far, more than 50 lakh income taxpayers have registered with the “E-Return” system, and among them, 42 lakh 50 thousand have used the system to submit their returns for the 2025-26 fiscal year, according to the NBR.
