Bangladesh Bank has issued a warning urging caution in transactions involving high-denomination banknotes, particularly Tk500 and Tk1,000, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and the upcoming cattle markets.
The central bank said the risk of counterfeit currency circulation tends to increase during this period, when large cash transactions are common for buying and selling sacrificial animals.
It called on the public to remain vigilant while handling such notes.
Every year, significant amounts of cash are exchanged during Eid-ul-Azha, raising the likelihood of fake notes being mixed with genuine ones.
To avoid fraud, people have been advised to carefully check the authenticity of banknotes during transactions.
The central bank recommended examining key security features of Tk100, Tk200, Tk500 and Tk1,000 notes, including watermarks, security threads, colour-shifting ink and raised printing.
If any note appears suspicious, individuals can seek assistance from temporary bank booths set up at cattle markets or from officials at nearby commercial banks.
To prevent fraud, the public has also been urged to avoid transactions through unknown or suspicious sources and instead use banks or authorised institutions. People are further encouraged to raise awareness among others on the issue.
For detailed information on the features of genuine banknotes, Bangladesh Bank has advised visiting its official website.
