To mark its 25th anniversary, BRAC Bank will plant 25,000 trees nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability through corporate social responsibility (CSR).
This project supports World Environment Day and the government’s national tree-planting campaign. It aims to make Bangladesh more climate-resilient and increase green spaces.
By planting 25,000 trees, BRAC Bank estimates it will sequester approximately 500 metric tons of CO2 over the next decade, helping to offset emissions and support healthier communities.
BRAC Bank’s programme stands out by focusing on biodiversity and ecological sustainability, and by ensuring that trees survive in the long term.
The project covers 14 key locations and features 117 tree species, including native, rare, endangered, medicinal, fruit, flowering, timber, and climate-resilient species.
The drive began with 2,000 saplings at Jahangirnagar University on 19 May 2026. The plantation and restoration organisation aims for measurable, lasting environmental impact beyond ceremonial activities. Selected species include 30 rare and endangered, 55 flowering, 20 timber, 8 fruit-bearing, and 8 medicinal varieties.
The plan focuses on helping wildlife, improving soil, holding more water in the ground, and storing more carbon. It especially supports native trees that are at risk from urban growth and deforestation.
BRAC Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, said, “As the country’s leading bank, we aim to transform unused spaces into green ecosystems benefiting communities, education, and biodiversity. As climate challenges intensify, we demonstrate the
private-sector action to build a more resilient, greener Bangladesh.”
The bank focuses on planting long-lasting, climate-resilient trees to store carbon and support biodiversity for many years. It also helps raise awareness of protecting native ecosystems.
BRAC Bank will ensure the survival of trees through structured monitoring. Tarupallab and the partnering institutions will provide quarterly updates, with the bank’s regional officials supervising the sites.
The program will work with universities, colleges, and public organisations across the country. Partners include Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Cumilla University, Barisal University, Leading University Sylhet, Metropolitan University, Noakhali University of Science and Technology, Carmichael College, Dhaka Alia Madrasa, Jamalpur Medical College, Noakhali Medical College, Khulna District Jail, Prokriti Shongrokkhon JonoUddog at Jamalpur, and Netrokona University.
