The Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposed national budget for the FY2026–27 at a special meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.
The meeting was held in the morning ahead of the formal presentation of the budget in Parliament by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury at 3:00pm.
The proposed budget, estimated at Tk9.38 lakh crore, is set to be the largest in Bangladesh’s history. It will also be the country’s 55th national budget, as well as the first budget of the current government and the finance minister’s maiden budget.
According to officials, the government has set a revenue collection target of Tk6.95 lakh crore, while the budget is expected to carry a deficit of Tk2.43 lakh crore.
The proposed budget is likely to target gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.5% in the coming fiscal year. The government is also expected to set an inflation target of 7.5%.
Meanwhile, the government has provisionally finalised an Annual Development Programme (ADP) worth nearly Tk3 lakh crore for FY2026–27. Of the total allocation, Tk1.99 lakh crore is expected to come from domestic resources, while Tk1.10 lakh crore will be financed through foreign loans and assistance.
The budget is expected to outline the government’s economic priorities, development strategy and fiscal measures aimed at sustaining growth, controlling inflation and supporting key infrastructure and social safety programmes.
