Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury
The government aims to move away from relying on a few conventional sources to finance public interest projects, turning instead to new economic models with diverse funding channels, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury stated. He added that private enterprises and diverse development partners are being engaged separately to guarantee the sustainable maintenance of civic amenity initiatives.
The minister made the remarks on Friday afternoon during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Chattogram WASA, Max Foundation, and Max Social Enterprise to establish a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for potable water supply in Chattogram.
He noted that the government intends to utilize the potential of Chattogram’s rivers and canals for cargo transportation, placing serious emphasis on municipal drainage systems. He highlighted that PPP frameworks are being prioritized to ensure safe water supply while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Backed by financial and technical support from the Embassy of the Netherlands, the pilot project will assess water demand and test delivery models across Ward Nos. 40 and 41, before scaling up across other municipal zones.
Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Economic Affairs and Development Cooperation at the Embassy of the Netherlands, Yana van der Linden, also addressed the gathering prior to the signing of the agreement.
