Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir
Bangladesh has set an ambitious target of attracting an additional $5 billion in investment from the United States over the next five years, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir announced on Saturday. Addressing the 30th-anniversary celebration of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) as the chief guest at the Radisson Blu Water Garden ballroom in Dhaka, the minister emphasized that the government and AmCham will work in close coordination to unlock wider investment windows, accelerate employment generation, and facilitate technology transfer.
He affirmed that Bangladesh is fully prepared to collaborate closely with American enterprises to expand economic avenues and integrate global expertise into the domestic market. The commemorative gathering drew notable dignitaries, including US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, AmCham President Syed Mohammad Kamal, Vice President Alauddin Azad, former chamber presidents, executive committee members, senior state officials, business leaders, and journalists.
Highlighting the historic trajectory of bilateral ties, the commerce minister lauded AmCham's vital contributions over the past three decades in bridging the public and private sectors to cultivate resilient economic channels between Dhaka and Washington. While annual two-way bilateral trade has surpassed $13 billion, Muktadir pointed out that the economic partnership extends far beyond transactional commerce, driven by knowledge-sharing, high-level corporate governance, and modern technological integration spearheaded by American corporations. AmCham member companies have already deployed more than $5 billion in cumulative investments across the country while generating over 20 percent of Bangladesh's total national revenue, demonstrating the profound trust American investors place in the nation’s economic fundamentals.
Touching upon recent high-level engagements, Muktadir noted that AmCham leadership had conveyed their readiness to channel another $5 billion in US investments into Bangladesh during a recent meeting with the Prime Minister. Pledging the administration's proactive support, he assured the business community that the commerce ministry and regulatory authorities will intervene swiftly to resolve practical operational challenges faced by foreign enterprises, citing the recent resolution of complicated licensing bottlenecks for Corteva Bangladesh within a single month.
The minister identified technology, digital innovation, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and financial services as high-potential sectors bolstered by Bangladesh's young demographic dividend and domestic market. Emphasizing that market size alone cannot guarantee capital inflows, he underscored ongoing institutional drives to deliver policy predictability, digitalize bureaucratic clearances, and simplify trade facilitation to ensure an investor-friendly ecosystem. Muktadir called for a consolidated, multi-stakeholder partnership between state institutions, global development partners, and chamber bodies to unlock a promising chapter of bilateral prosperity.
