Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that creating new entrepreneurs and generating employment for the country’s growing workforce is the primary objective of the current government. He emphasized that a new project launched by Karmasangsthan Bank will play a vital role in integrating ultra-poor, marginalized, disadvantaged, and climate-vulnerable communities into active economic operations.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Small Business Microfinance & Micro Enterprise Fund (SBMMEF) project and loan cheque distribution ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, the minister explained that the initial Tk 50 crore scheme serves as a pilot initiative. The project targets individuals who are often apprehensive about visiting conventional banking institutions, encouraging financial inclusion and micro-entrepreneurship.
Amir Khosru further highlighted the government's push toward prioritizing the creative economy. He noted that efforts are underway to connect grassroots creative individuals with mainstream markets through a combination of credit facility, practical training, product branding, and marketing support. Urging Karmasangsthan Bank to expand such initiatives, he stressed that talents across various pursuits, including music and culture, should be commercialized to add tangible value to the national GDP.
Regarding the financial discipline of Karmasangsthan Bank, the minister acknowledged its overall profitability and strong performance. However, he advised the institution to enhance its credibility further by reducing its classified loan ratio from 4.86% down to between 1% and 2%.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Bijon Kanti Sarkar, also spoke as a special guest, reiterating that continued support for marginalized communities will drive socioeconomic progress across Bangladesh.
