The first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied by US-based energy trader Gunvor under a 13-year bilateral agreement has arrived in Bangladesh, with regasification and discharge operations beginning Thursday afternoon.
The vessel LNG Geneva berthed at the Summit LNG Terminal at 4:12 pm on Thursday (September 17) to offload roughly 142,400 cubic meters of LNG.
Under the 13-year contract, Bangladesh will import 117 LNG cargoes from Gunvor, with five scheduled to arrive within this year. The government secured this long-term supply deal with the US supplier to diversify fuel procurement channels and insulate domestic energy supplies against volatility stemming from regional conflicts in the Middle East.
Petrobangla sources confirmed that unloading commenced shortly after mooring, marking the maiden delivery under Gunvor's long-term framework. The shipment closely followed another cargo received on September 14, providing modest relief to the national gas grid.
A total of nine LNG cargoes are lined up for delivery this month. Four have already arrived, comprising two from Aramco and one each from BP and Posco. Following Thursday's Gunvor shipment, four more cargoes are scheduled: Aramco on September 18, TotalEnergies on September 23, Aramco again on September 25, and a second Gunvor parcel on September 28.
As of 8:00 pm on September 17, total daily supply across the national grid stood at 2,605 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d), with domestic fields contributing 1,612 MMcf/d and imported regasified LNG supplying 993 MMcf/d.
