Citing sustained rallies in the global energy market and substantial operational losses incurred by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), the government has sharply increased domestic retail prices across all categories of fuel oil by BDT 20 per litre.
The price adjustments were announced in an official gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Sunday night (September 20), taking effect from midnight.
Under the revised price framework:
Diesel has been increased from BDT 115 to BDT 135 per litre.
Kerosene has been raised from BDT 135 to BDT 155 per litre.
Petrol has moved from BDT 140 to BDT 160 per litre.
Octane has been fixed at BDT 165 per litre, up from BDT 145.
According to a press statement from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, benchmark crude and refined petroleum prices alongside ocean freight charges have climbed substantially since March due to protracted conflicts in the Middle East. Authorities highlighted that while the government previously raised diesel by BDT 15 per litre to BDT 115 on April 18, consumer prices were held flat for the following five months despite severe international volatility.
The ministry noted that even as international prices more than doubled, tariffs were frozen locally in the public interest, leading the BPC to rack up cumulative operational losses of approximately BDT 22,875.66 crore between March and August. The energy division also stated that domestic prices continue to remain comparatively lower than those in neighboring economies.
