The benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) declined for the second consecutive trading session on Sunday (September 27) evening, weighed down by growing investor nervousness regarding impending quarterly corporate earnings announcements. The DSEX, the broad index of the premier bourse, retreated by 34.2 points or 0.61 percent to settle at 5,582.4 points, extending losses from the previous trading week. Heavy selling pressure was observed across heavyweight banking, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing counters as retail participants liquidated speculative holdings.
Market turnover, an indispensable gauge of investor liquidity and trading engagement, contracted by 14.8 percent to Tk 542 crore compared to Tk 636 crore recorded in the preceding session. Market analysts highlighted that heightened domestic inflation and policy interest rate adjustments implemented by the central bank have increased borrowing costs for listed corporations, dampening third-quarter profitability projections. Consequently, major institutional fund managers adopted a cautious wait-and-see strategy, holding liquidity in treasury securities.
Sectoral analysis revealed that the pharmaceutical sector witnessed the steepest declines, dropping 1.8 percent, followed closely by the commercial banking sector and engineering equities. Out of 398 issues traded on the premier bourse on Sunday, only 92 advanced, 268 declined, and 38 remained unchanged at their previous closing prices. Despite the broader market rout, several export-oriented textile manufacturers and renewable power producers managed to post marginal capital gains on the back of resilient export volume announcements.
Market intermediaries and stockbrokers noted that lingering macroeconomic concerns, coupled with strict central bank caps on speculative margin lending, have curtailed margin trading volumes across brokerage firms. However, market watchdogs noted that the ongoing correction represents a healthy price stabilization cycle that removes speculative bubbles created during previous weeks. Representatives of the DSE Brokers Association (DBA) emphasized that long-term fundamental investors should capitalize on current discounted valuation multiples of blue-chip equities.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Chief Regulatory Officer stated on Sunday evening, "Investors are exercising prudence ahead of corporate dividend declarations, but market fundamentals remain well-anchored by systemic regulatory reforms." He advised retail traders to evaluate companies based on audited cash flows and governance transparency rather than unsubstantiated market rumors. He concluded by assuring that market surveillance teams are actively monitoring trading patterns to prevent manipulative price dumping.
