An illustration of a handshake between Bangladesh and the United States
Bangladesh’s exports to the United States rose 11.51% year-on-year to US$3.35 billion during July-October of the 2026-27 fiscal year, up from $3 billion in the corresponding period of FY26, according to the latest Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data.
The US market accounted for nearly one-fifth of Bangladesh’s total merchandise export earnings during the period, making it the country’s largest export destination.
Overall, Bangladesh earned $17.09 billion from merchandise exports in the first four months of FY27, registering 5.88% growth year-on-year. Exports to the US therefore grew at nearly twice the overall rate.
Mohammad Hasan Arif, vice chairman and chief executive (additional secretary) of the EPB, said the growth reflected the increasing competitiveness of Bangladeshi products in the global market.
He attributed the performance to exporters’ ability to ensure timely shipments, improve product quality and comply with international standards despite global economic uncertainties.
Bangladesh is also expanding its presence in emerging and non-traditional markets, particularly in the Middle East.
According to EPB data, Turkey recorded the highest export growth among major destinations during July-October, with shipments rising 82.69% to $292.15 million from $159.92 million in the same period a year earlier.
Exports to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) increased by 15.52% and 12.93% respectively, while Spain also recorded double-digit growth.
Arif said the encouraging performance in emerging markets, particularly in the Middle East, would help diversify Bangladesh’s export destinations and reduce dependence on a few major markets.
The United Kingdom remained Bangladesh’s second-largest export destination during the four-month period, with shipments worth $1.74 billion, followed by Germany at $1.57 billion.
Spain and the Netherlands ranked fourth and fifth respectively, highlighting the continued importance of European markets to Bangladesh’s export earnings.
Bangladesh’s exports to the US reached $756.64 million in October 2026, up 12.10% from $674.96 million in October 2025.
Overall merchandise exports stood at $3.99 billion during the month, registering year-on-year growth of 4.39%.
Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said Bangladesh’s relatively favourable tariff position compared with some competing countries had helped sustain export growth in the US market.
He said the BGMEA was working with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to address the additional 10% tariff and explore ways to secure an exemption for Bangladeshi exports.
“We are continuing our discussions and engagement with the USTR to seek a solution so that Bangladesh can avoid the additional 10% tariff. We are hopeful that through continued dialogue and negotiations, an appropriate outcome can be achieved,” he said.
Export analysts and policymakers consider market and product diversification, improved quality, timely delivery and compliance with international standards essential to sustaining export growth.
Maintaining competitiveness in major markets such as the US and Europe while expanding trade ties with emerging economies will be crucial to building a more resilient export base.
Arif expressed optimism that continued growth in established markets and rising shipments to non-traditional destinations would help sustain the country’s export momentum in the coming months.
With merchandise exports reaching $17.09 billion in the first four months of FY27, Bangladesh is seeking to consolidate its position in major markets while expanding its global presence.
