A newlywed woman, Mosha. Jhuma Akter (19), who had been married for just one month and 19 days, was found dead in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram.

According to police, the body was recovered on March 19 from a bedroom of a second-floor flat at Amin Villa in the Aman Bazar area under South Pahartali ward. The body was later sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Following the incident, the victim’s father, Md. Shah Alam, filed a case with Hathazari Model Police Station on Sunday (March 22). The case has been recorded as No. 18.

Police have arrested the victim’s husband, Md. Newaz Sharif alias Babu (31), son of Azgar Ali of the same area, in connection with the incident.
Family members of the husband claimed that Jhuma died by suicide, alleging she hanged herself from a ventilator grill in the washroom using a scarf.
However, the victim’s family rejected the claim, alleging that she was murdered following mental and physical abuse by her husband. They further accused that the husband was involved in an extramarital affair, which led to the incident.

Jhuma’s elder brother, Touhidul Alam, who works abroad, said he arranged the marriage and returned home, but within less than two months, his sister was found dead. He alleged that she did not commit suicide but was killed in a planned manner.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari Model Police Station, Md. Zahidur Rahman, confirmed that a case has been filed and the accused husband has been arrested. He added that the investigation is ongoing.
