Police are investigating an attack on former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's residence in Magura after windows were damaged and an apparent attempt was made to set the gate on fire.
The Magura residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan came under attack on Wednesday night, with unidentified individuals vandalising parts of the property.
The incident occurred around 8:45 pm in the Keshab Mor area of Magura town. Police said several windowpanes of the house were shattered, although no casualties were reported.
Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said there were indications that petrol had been poured on the property's iron gate in an apparent attempt to set it on fire. However, investigators found no evidence suggesting the use of petrol bombs.
Police rushed to the scene following the incident and strengthened security around the residence. By late evening, patrol vehicles and law enforcement personnel were stationed near the house as the investigation continued.
A video circulated on social media after the attack appeared to contain the sound of an explosion. Police have not confirmed the authenticity of the footage or whether it is directly linked to the incident.
A relative of Shakib Al Hasan told local media that an ill family member currently lives at the residence and that the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
Shakib was elected as a member of parliament from the Magura-1 constituency in Bangladesh's 2024 general election. He has also been named among the accused in a murder case related to the July 2024 mass uprising, which was filed with Adabor Police Station in Dhaka in August 2024.
