A CNG auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in Chattogram for strangling 13-year-old student Jannatul Tazmin with a traditional towel (gamcha) in a paddy field following a physical scuffle in Lalmai, Cumilla. The District Detective Branch (DB) of police apprehended the suspect, identified as Suman, and recovered the victim’s iPhone based on information extracted during initial interrogation.
Cumilla Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisuzzaman confirmed the breakthrough on Friday evening (October 9). He stated that the motive behind the murder has largely been unraveled, supported by forensic evidence at the crime scene, confession details, and analysis of call records from the victim's phone. Investigators confirmed signs of a scuffle in the paddy field before Suman strangled the seventh-grader alone.
According to police and family accounts, Tazmin arrived in Cumilla by bus late Wednesday night (October 7) and boarded Suman’s auto-rickshaw to head toward her family's rented home in the Racecourse area. She was last spotted on surveillance footage in front of Hotel Noorjahan at 12:19 AM. Taking advantage of the late hour, Suman bypassed the city route, driving her in the opposite direction through Bijra, Rasulpur, and Shikaripara toward a remote paddy field in Jagatpur, Lalmai upazila. Sensing danger, Tazmin shared her live location and sent distress messages via WhatsApp to her father at 2:58 AM pleading for help, but her father was asleep and missed the alerts. Upon reaching the field, she attempted to flee on foot, but the driver overpowered and murdered her.
Police recovered Tazmin's unidentified body alongside the abandoned auto-rickshaw on Thursday morning, which the family later identified. Her father, Abdul Alim, a pharmaceutical employee originally from Chhatiatala in Jashore Sadar, lodged a murder case with Lalmai Police Station against unidentified individuals. Tazmin was a seventh-grade student at Farida Bidyayatan in Cumilla city, though school records show she had stopped attending classes in February. She had initially left her home on the morning of October 4, stating she was visiting a female friend.
