Former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder
The High Court on Sunday (September 6) granted bail to former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder in connection with the murder case of Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Rupa, who was fatally shot in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar on August 4, 2024.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice K.M. Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher delivered the verdict following the final hearing on a previously issued rule concerning his bail plea. Deputy Attorney General Advocate Roknuzzaman Suja confirmed the judicial order to reporters.
Earlier during the investigation, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka had granted police a seven-day remand to interrogate the former minister in custody. Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuddin issued the remand order on October 4, 2024, after investigators produced Majumder with a 10-day remand prayer, submitting that primary evidence indicated his involvement in the fatal shooting.
Ramiz Uddin Rupa (21), an undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Daffodil International University, was shot dead during mass protests in the Karwan Bazar area under Tejgaon Police Station on August 4, 2024. A murder case was subsequently registered at Tejgaon Police Station naming Majumder among the accused.
Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the former food minister from a residence in the Bashundhara Residential Area on the night of October 3, 2024.
Sadhan Chandra Majumder, who also served as the General Secretary of the Naogaon District Awami League, was elected Member of Parliament from the Naogaon-1 constituency (Niamatpur, Porsha, and Sapahar) in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th general elections on the Awami League ticket. He was inducted into the cabinet as Food Minister following the 2018 general election and retained the portfolio until the fall of the Awami League government.
