A former officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhaka's Uttara East Police Station has escaped police custody on Thursday, leading to the withdrawal of the incumbent OC on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division confirmed the decision on Friday evening adding that the current OC has reassigned to police headquarters.
Former OC, Shah Alam, had been arrested in Kushtia on Wednesday in connection with a murder case during the anti-discrimination movement. On Thursday afternoon, preparations were underway to present him in court when he escaped from the custody of Uttara East Police Station.
Following the incident, the current OC of the police station, Mohibullah, has been withdrown and assistant sub-inspector Sajjad was temporarily suspended for negligence of duty.
Shah Alam had served as the OC of Uttara East Police Station during the anti-discrimination student movement last year. His role during the protests came under scrutiny, leading to his implication in a murder case filed at the station on September 2.
