Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator and valiant freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam has declared that just as the people of Dhaka historically stood beside Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, they now stand firmly united with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The DSCC administrator made the remarks at Nagar Bhaban on August 28 following the culmination of a vibrant civic cultural procession titled "Dhaka Shovajatra," organized as part of the "416 Hridoye Dhaka" festival celebrating the 416-year legacy of the capital. Highlighting civic pride and heritage preservation, DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam stated:
"Holding replicas of historical landmarks in today's procession showcases Dhaka's rich legacy and heritage to the people. These historical structures are the pride of Dhaka and the entire nation. Everyone must cherish Dhaka from the heart with the conviction that 'This Dhaka is mine'—only then can we keep this city clean, green, and mosquito-free."
Salam observed that collective civic responsibility is vital to combat severe air pollution, noting that engaging citizens directly is the core objective of the "416 Hridoye Dhaka" festivities. He shared plans to host the grand finale of the festival at the historic Lalbagh Fort in the presence of the Prime Minister, with widespread participation from all strata of society, particularly the original residents of Old Dhaka.
He announced that the City Corporation will organize an inter-school and college essay competition on Victory Day (December 16), pledging that the corporation will sponsor the lifetime education expenses of the first, second, and third prize winners. Furthermore, beginning next month, the DSCC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, will provide two dedicated buses per school every Saturday to take students on educational tours of Dhaka's historical landmarks.
Reiterating urban renewal plans for Old Dhaka, Salam emphasized modernizing streets, upgrading civic lighting, and restoring its historic charm to attract erstwhile residents back to the traditional quarters. The grand procession, featuring thousands of participants and traditional cultural exhibits, commenced from Laxmibazar in Old Dhaka and traversed several major thoroughfares before concluding at Nagar Bhaban.
