Surgeons perform Bangladesh's first robotic surgery using the Medbot Toumai system at United Healthcare in Dhaka
In a historic milestone for the nation's healthcare sector, United Healthcare, located at United City along Madani Avenue in Dhaka, has successfully conducted the country's first-ever robotic surgeries. Hospital authorities noted that the introduction of AI-driven robotic surgical technology marks the beginning of a transformative chapter in advanced clinical care in Bangladesh.
Two landmark robotic procedures were performed on Monday. Prof. Dr. Rafiqus Saleheen executed a robotic cholecystectomy on a 34-year-old male patient suffering from gallstones, while Prof. Dr. Samshad Jahan (Shelly) performed a robotic hysterectomy on a 45-year-old female patient diagnosed with excessive uterine bleeding. Both precision procedures were carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team utilizing the state-of-the-art Medbot Toumai Endoscopic Surgical Robot.
The integration of robotic surgical systems enables surgeons to view internal anatomical structures through high-definition 3D visualization. With robotic arms capable of 360-degree rotation, specialists can operate within narrow, complex anatomical spaces with superior precision. This minimally invasive technique significantly reduces large surgical incisions, minimizes blood loss, limits adjacent tissue trauma, alleviates post-operative pain, and facilitates accelerated recovery times.
Highlighting the clinical benefits, Prof. Dr. Rafiqus Saleheen emphasized that the maneuverability of robotic arms allows surgeons to operate in delicate areas while safeguarding vital blood vessels and organ structures. Looking ahead, Prof. Dr. Samshad Jahan revealed strategic plans to expand robotic surgery across cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology, general surgery, gynecology, and thoracic surgery. She noted that providing world-class treatments domestically will reduce patient reliance on overseas travel and curb foreign currency expenditure. United Healthcare authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing investments in cutting-edge diagnostics, emergency response, and critical care infrastructure to establish domestic clinical self-reliance.
