Law enforcement agencies have blanketed Dhaka in a tight security net, establishing more than 200 checkpoints and stepped-up patrols across major intersections and entry routes following a spate of crude bomb blasts and an arson attack on a passenger bus.
At barricades across key thoroughfares, police personnel are flagging down commercial vehicles, private cars, and public transit to inspect vehicle documentation and passenger identities. Suspicious compartments and passenger baggage are being subjected to detailed searches. Commuter motorcycles face heightened scrutiny, with riders questioned and vehicle registration documents checked, momentarily slowing traffic flows before clearance.
The security clampdown follows an outbreak of coordinated violence on Friday (September 18), during which 14 crude bombs were detonated across seven key locations in the capital and a passenger bus was torched in front of Kafrul Police Station. Police monitoring has been intensified across major arteries, including Malibagh, Agargaon, Mohakhali, Jatrabari, Babubazar, and Moghbazar.
Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Media and Public Relations Division, Md. Akhtar Hossain, stated on Saturday that specialized security arrangements have been rolled out to safeguard city residents and maintain law and order. "Checkpoints have been set up at over 200 locations across Dhaka to conduct thorough inspections," he noted, adding that special surveillance focuses on critical intersections, flyovers, arterial gateways, suspicious vehicles, and motorcycle movements to prevent sabotage or crime.
In addition to static checkpoints, the capital has seen an increase in foot patrols, mobile vehicle patrols, motorcycle patrols, and static picket teams. Regular police station personnel are operating in close coordination with specialized units, including the Detective Branch (DB), the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, and the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), keeping all operational divisions on high alert.
