In a demonstration of humanitarian commitment, the Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) Foundation has extended financial assistance worth Tk 20 lakh to two sick journalists and the families of two deceased journalists from the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF). The support was handed over on Friday during the annual general meeting of BSRF held at the BIAM Multipurpose Hall in New Iskaton, Dhaka.
Under this initiative, the families of the late journalists Harun Or Rashid Talukder and Humayun Kabir Khokon, along with ailing journalists Rakib Uddin and Amanur Rahman, received Tk 5 lakh each. Md. Imrul Hasan, DMD & Head of A&F at EWPD and BCDL and Director of Bashundhara Sports City; M. Z. Hossain Arju, Head of Division (R&D) at ABG; and Md. Shajedul Karim, General Manager of Geology & Mining at ABG Foundation, represented the foundation at the event.
Receiving the check on behalf of his father, late Inqilab journalist Harun Or Rashid Talukder, Md. Tauhid Harun expressed deep gratitude to the foundation for standing by their family during difficult times. Sharmin Sultana Rina, wife of the late chief reporter of Daily Amader Shomoy, Humayun Kabir Khokon, noted that Bashundhara Group had previously assisted them during her husband's passing from COVID-19 and that this ongoing support provides crucial relief for their family.
Nasrin Jahan, wife of ailing Daily Sangbad journalist Rakib Uddin, accepted the check on his behalf and conveyed her appreciation to ABG Foundation. Daily Naya Diganta journalist Amanur Rahman personally received his medical assistance check, praising the foundation's dedication to supporting journalists in crisis and expressing hope for continued collaboration in the future.
Speaking at the event, Md. Imrul Hasan emphasized that journalists act as a mirror to society, and financial stability is essential for them to carry out their duties effectively. He reiterated ABG's ongoing commitment to supporting journalists and highlighted various humanitarian activities led by Sayem Sobhan Anvir, Chairman of ABG, which include supporting underprivileged children, river erosion victims, impoverished families, and meritorious students.
Additionally, it was announced at the meeting that BSRF and ABG Foundation will jointly introduce a media award to recognize and encourage investigative, public-interest, and positive reporting, with ABG Foundation serving as the official sponsor.
