DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam
Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), urged students on Sunday to take an active civic role in revitalizing the capital, noting that ordinary citizens consistently look to youth behavior for community guidance. He stressed that students have an indispensable responsibility in mobilizing public awareness against dengue outbreaks and halting indiscriminate waste disposal across Dhaka.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of Jagannath University’s (JnU) central auditorium—renovated and modernized by the DSCC at a cost of roughly BDT 2.5 crore—Salam underscored the far-reaching influence of youth discipline. He maintained that proactive civic leadership from students creates a ripple effect across wider society, urging them to directly join hands with municipal authorities in waste management and vector-control operations.
During the event, the DSCC Administrator formally announced that the beautification, upkeep, and overall maintenance of the historic Bahadur Shah Park would be entrusted directly to the Jagannath University administration and student body. Underlining that an iconic landmark deeply intertwined with the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny cannot remain trapped in neglect and mismanagement, he called upon the campus community to protect and preserve its historic dignity.
Prioritizing students' physical and mental well-being alongside academic life, Abdus Salam declared the dedicated allocation of the "Dhupkhola Ground" for university sports activities. He further called on Jagannath University to spearhead a progressive cultural movement rooted in Old Dhaka. Responding to a formal proposal submitted by JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin, the administrator also announced the construction of an "Anti-Fascism Square" (Fascibad Birodhi Chattar) in the campus vicinity to commemorate the slain Biswajit Das.
Presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin, the ceremony was attended by Member of Parliament for Dhaka-7 Hamidur Rahman, faculty members, student representatives, administrative officers, and senior DSCC officials.
