A street in the U.S. state of Michigan has been renamed in honor of the recently deceased Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia. The city’s Carpenter Street will now officially be known as Khaleda Zia Street. The Hamtramck City Council approved the name change as a tribute to her legacy.
The BNP media cell confirmed the development, stating in a Facebook post that the renaming recognizes the three-time former Prime Minister and BNP leader. The street, located in the heart of Hamtramck, is an important thoroughfare, and its renaming is seen by the Bangladeshi expatriate community as a unique acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s history, leadership, and democratic values.
According to the media cell, the portion of Carpenter Street between Joseph Campau and Conant Street was officially designated as Khaleda Zia Street following the recent City Council approval. Currently, four city councilors of Bangladeshi descent are serving in Hamtramck, and their active efforts were instrumental in making this renaming possible.
