The Election Commission has decided to extend National Identity (NID) Card registration to citizens aged 16 and 17, lowering the threshold from the previous requirement of 18 years.
The decision was announced on Sunday through a circular issued by the National Identity Registration Sub-division of the Election Commission Secretariat.
The directive takes effect immediately and applies to all Bangladeshi citizens who have turned 16 or 17 at the time of application.
According to the circular, the decision has been taken under Section 5 of the National Identity Registration Act 2010, as amended in 2013, which provides the legal framework for the registration process.
The order, signed by Khan Abi Shahanur Khan, Director of Registration and Expatriate Affairs at the National Identity Registration Sub-division, has been communicated to all regional, district and upazila election officers across the country with instructions for immediate implementation.
The move is expected to bring millions of young Bangladeshis into the national identity registration system, potentially facilitating their access to various government and financial services that require a National ID card.
