Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen held a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the latter's office in the Secretariat on Monday, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and development cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the ambassador conveyed congratulatory messages from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to Prime Minister Rahman on his election, the Prime Minister's Adviser Humayun Kabir told reporters after the meeting.
Kabir described the session as a courtesy call, noting that while detailed discussions on specific issues such as investment or the Teesta River project did not take place, both sides exchanged views on ways to advance bilateral relations and work together as development partners.
The Chinese ambassador also extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit China, though no timeline has been set.
Kabir said the decision on foreign visits rests with the Prime Minister, who currently has several domestic priorities to address.
The China visit will be considered when the Prime Minister begins his schedule of overseas engagements, he added.
Speaking about the broader relationship, the adviser said Bangladesh-China ties are historic and were initiated during the era of late President Ziaur Rahman.
He noted that a strong relationship has been maintained between the two countries ever since, with China serving as one of Bangladesh's most important development partners.
Discussions also touched on elevating the partnership to new dimensions, expanding development cooperation and safeguarding the interests of the people of both nations, Kabir said.
