"Mother"—a tiny word with an ocean of depth. From before birth through every stage of life, a mother remains the most selfless companion. Mother’s Day, observed globally on the second Sunday of May, serves as a dedicated occasion to honor this unique bond and express gratitude for her endless sacrifices.
While the modern tradition of Mother’s Day originated in the United States—started by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914—the essence of the day transcends borders. In Bangladesh, the day is celebrated with increasing importance, reminding a tech-dependent generation to reconnect with the emotional roots of family.
A mother is not just a relative; she is a child’s first teacher, best friend, and safest shelter. From learning to speak to understanding right from wrong, her influence shapes the future of the next generation. Especially in the socio-economic context of Bangladesh, mothers in both rural and urban areas act as the glue holding families together, often sacrificing their own dreams, health, and comforts to ensure a brighter future for their children.
However, the day also brings a call for self-reflection. With the rising number of elderly care homes and the increasing distance created by busy modern lifestyles, many mothers face neglect in their later years. Religious and cultural teachings across the world—including the Islamic proverb that "Heaven lies beneath the feet of mothers"—underscore that a mother’s status is supreme.
Ultimately, Mother’s Day should extend beyond social media posts and gifts. True honor lies in being responsible toward her, valuing her feelings, and offering the time and respect she deserves. As experts and writers have noted throughout history, there is no substitute for a mother’s love. While the world dedicates one day to her, the reality remains that for a child, every day should be a day to love and cherish their mother.
