Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have adopted a series of additional measures to strengthen campus security and expedite the arrest of the accused in connection with the attempted rape and murder of a female student on the campus.
The decisions were announced at a press conference held at the university Senate Hall this morning, where University Treasurer Professor M Abdur Rab and Proctor Professor Dr A.K.M. Rashidul Alam briefed journalists on the latest developments.
Professor Rashidul Alam said a seven-member investigation committee has already been formed and started work regarding the incident that took place on the night of May 12.
He said the university administration also announced a bounty of Taka 50,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the accused.
He said members of different law enforcement agencies, including district police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Detective Branch (DB), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), are jointly conducting drives to arrest the suspect.
Police cyber teams and the intelligence wing of RAB are also providing technological assistance in the investigation, he added.
The proctor further said the administration had been informed that directives had been issued from the highest level of the state to ensure the quick arrest of the accused.
Speaking at the briefing, Treasurer Professor Dr M Abdur Rab termed the incident "shocking and condemnable" and said the university administration expressed deep concern over the matter.
He said an emergency meeting chaired by the vice-chancellor had earlier taken 14 important decisions following demands raised by students and student organisations, and implementation of those decisions had already begun.
He also said the university decided to form a permanent committee to prevent bullying and ragging in accordance with the ‘Policy on Prevention of Bullying and Ragging in Educational Institutions-2023’.
The press conference was moderated by acting Director of Public Relations Office Mohammad Mahiuddin, while Acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman, assistant proctors and other university officials were present at the press conference.
