Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered legal action against those involved in the brutal killing of a dog in Narsingdi after a video of the incident sparked widespread outrage on social media.
Following the prime minister's directive, police arrested the main accused Mohammad Ali.
The prime minister was deeply distressed after watching the video, which showed the dog being killed by having bricks tied around its neck before being thrown into a river.
He expressed shock that such cruelty towards an animal could occur in a civilised society and ordered immediate action against those responsible.
The incident took place on Wednesday (24 June) near Nagariakandi Bridge in Narsingdi Sadar upazila. The dog struggled before drowning. Footage of the incident later went viral on social media, triggering public condemnation.
Following the prime minister's instruction, members of Narsingdi district Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal located Mohammad Ali and handed him over to police.
Locals claimed Mohammad Ali had long been addicted to drugs.
Police said a woman, identified as Shahin Ara, allegedly instigated Mohammad Ali to kill the dog to rid the area of what she considered a ‘nuisance’. She has been absconding since the incident.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.
