India’s promise to give Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman an “honourable welcome” during his upcoming visit has sent a clear signal about New Delhi’s intentions towards Dhaka, according to ThePrint.
The gesture indicates India’s willingness to reset relations and engage with Bangladesh’s current leadership in a constructive manner.
With New Delhi extending such an outreach, the responsibility now rests with Dhaka to respond positively, rather than allowing bilateral tensions to persist.
Continuing a hardline approach despite India’s conciliatory signal would be foolhardy and could undermine efforts to improve relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The message from New Delhi appears clear: the door for improved relations is open. The ball is now in Dhaka’s court.
Bangladesh, therefore, needs to move away from unnecessary confrontation and adopt a pragmatic approach towards India
Both sides have significant interests in maintaining stable and mutually beneficial relations, particularly in areas such as trade, connectivity, security and regional cooperation.
The proposed visit by Tarique Rahman could provide an opportunity for both countries to open a new chapter in their relationship.
For bilateral ties to move forward, Bangladesh and India need to overcome the grievances and tensions of the past and focus on building a relationship based on mutual respect, cooperation and shared interests.
