Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has described President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as a “politician through and through,” saying there could be no better choice for the presidency.
“There could be no better choice than him,” Khosru told journalists at the main gate of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after Mirza Fakhrul was declared elected president on Thursday afternoon.
Khosru said Alamgir had gone through a long political struggle, endured imprisonment and persecution, and fought against the autocratic regime despite risks to his health and life.
“Today, we have regained a democratic country because of that struggle,” he said.
He said an election had been held, followed by the formation of a parliament and a government, adding that Mirza Fakhrul had remained at the forefront of the movement and struggle.
Describing the president-elect as honest and competent, the finance minister said he was delighted that “such a person is going to adorn the office of the president.”
Khosru said the holding of a presidential election by an elected parliament was itself a major achievement, noting that people had struggled and made sacrifices to restore democracy.
“We must continue this democratic process and sustain the culture of democracy,” he said. “If this continues, InshaAllah, together we will be able to build the Bangladesh envisioned by our Prime Minister.”
Asked about his expectations from the new president, Khosru said Mirza Fakhrul had reached the position as a torchbearer of democracy and expressed confidence that he would continue playing a role in ensuring the continuity of the democratic process.
Mirza Fakhrul was elected president with 255 votes in the presidential election held at the Jatiya Sangsad as the BNP candidate.
