Chief Whip of the National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam has urged the nation to exercise patience during the ongoing financial crisis, asserting that extensive economic restructuring is underway after the previous regime siphoned off approximately Tk 30 lakh crore from state coffers.
Addressing the audience as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the Bangladesh Magic Festival 2026, held at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka on August 28, the Chief Whip highlighted the magnitude of past financial corruption and the government's resolve to restore stability. Detailing past irregularities, Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam stated:
"A single minister of the former regime amassed 356 residences abroad, while another individual embezzled Tk 2 lakh crore alone. Over Tk 1 lakh crore was systematically plundered from the power sector, with legal indemnity provided to shield perpetrators."
Islam underscored that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working tirelessly to revitalize a fragile and battered economy, setting an example for the administration through an austere and unpretentious lifestyle. He maintained that rather than engaging in unwarranted criticism, citizens should actively cooperate with the government to ensure long-term socio-economic stability.
The cultural gathering was presided over by Minhajur Rahman Yuvraj, President of the Combined Illusionists' Association. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Engineer Engr. Nur Azizur Rahman, and renowned magician Ali Raj also addressed the assembly as special guests.
