Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom
National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom has said that during the past 15 years of the Awami League regime, various unlawful activities such as extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and money laundering escalated significantly.
He stated that through the most recently held neutral national parliamentary election, democracy has been restored in Bangladesh.
The Speaker made these remarks during a musical evening and banquet arranged at the National Parliament's LD Hall to mark the arrival of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip in Bangladesh.
IPU Secretary General Anda Filip and the accompanying delegation participated in the musical evening and dinner banquet.
The Speaker said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the current government is working toward fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the general public. He emphasized that the current administration must ensure justice through the establishment of the rule of law.
He pointed out that ever since its founding in 1889, the IPU has been playing a crucial role in safeguarding human rights and expanding parliamentary relations among nations worldwide. It is also making substantial contributions to addressing climate change and promoting environmental protection.
He further noted that because Bangladesh is naturally vulnerable to environmental and ecological disasters, the IPU can play a meaningful role in this context.
The Speaker observed that developing countries like Bangladesh are bearing negative consequences as a result of the global energy crisis and ongoing conflict in the Middle East. By fostering parliamentary leadership across the globe, the IPU can exert an effective influence within democratic frameworks to resolve such challenges.
IPU Secretary General Anda Filip stated that a democratic parliament elected directly by the people has been established in Bangladesh. She observed that citizens exercised their franchise to better their fortunes and protect human dignity, noting that parliament forms the very bedrock of democracy and must serve as a guardian in protecting human rights and the rule of law.
Following the conclusion of the discussion, a cultural presentation was staged by the Birishiri Academy of Netrokona. The Speaker, along with the invited dignitaries, enjoyed the musical evening. Later, the IPU Secretary General took part in the dinner banquet.
Deputy Speaker of the Bangladesh National Parliament Barrister Kayser Kamal, Members of Parliament, and distinguished invited guests were present at the event.
