National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has urged citizens never to allow agents and collaborators of foreign powers to set foot on the soil of Bangladesh. Addressing an audience in Bhola, he stated that the country had been held hostage for the past 17 years by oppressive plunderers whose crimes have yet to be penalized, expressing hope that the incoming administration will hold them accountable. He exhorted the public never to lend support to such elements and emphasized that safeguarding the nation’s independence and sovereignty remains a core responsibility for every citizen.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a public gathering organized by the local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at the Tazumuddin Upazila Parishad auditorium on Sunday (September 13) afternoon.
Invoking the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the Speaker underlined that the value of integrity is immeasurable. He noted that although decades have passed since Ziaur Rahman’s demise, people continue to revere him deeply. He remarked that the BNP repeatedly ascends to state power largely because voters place their trust in the foundational good work left behind by Ziaur Rahman. Despite governing for nearly five years, Ziaur Rahman left behind no land and no personal wealth in bank accounts, while his four living brothers remained entirely out of the public limelight without leveraging power.
Speaker Hafiz maintained that Ziaur Rahman governed through unimpeachable integrity and patriotism, characterizing him as an exemplary statesman rarely witnessed in the contemporary Muslim world and drawing historical parallels to describe his public-spirited governance. He affirmed that the BNP must continue working to uphold that untarnished legacy of public service.
Speaking on his constitutional role as the parliamentary Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed noted that to preserve institutional impartiality, he formally resigned from the BNP's National Standing Committee and refrains entirely from partisan party events. He observed that parliamentary opposition parties remain broadly satisfied with his stewardship and harbor no doubts regarding his neutrality.
Presided over by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP President Golam Mostafa Mintu, the gathering was also addressed by Upazila BNP General Secretary Omar Asad Rintu, alongside grassroots leaders and activists from the party and its allied bodies.
Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikrom, has been elected Member of Parliament seven times from the Bhola-3 (Lalmohan-Tazumuddin) constituency and has served as a cabinet minister three times, before being elected Speaker of the 13th National Parliament.
