Prime Minister Tarique Rahman
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to depart for New York on Monday (September 21) to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he will address the assembly on September 24.
According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister’s overall tour of the United States has been shortened. Following his address on September 24, he will leave New York for Dhaka on the night of September 25.
Senior ministry officials indicated that the initial itinerary had envisioned a visit spanning September 21 to 29, which included planned travel to San Francisco after engagements in New York. Official sources noted that the Prime Minister will be accompanied by a lean delegation, reflecting austerity measures compared to the expansive entourages of past administrations.
During his stay in New York, the Prime Minister is slated to participate in high-level UN sessions, sideline discussions hosted by Bangladesh, and bilateral meetings with world leaders. The multilateral sessions will cover sustainable development, pandemic preparedness, sea-level rise, and nuclear disarmament. In addition, Bangladesh will host side events focused on resolving the Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
Diplomatic sources in New York confirmed that bilateral talks are being arranged on the sidelines of the assembly. Leaders on the prospective schedule include Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, European Council President António Costa, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson. Furthermore, he is expected to attend a dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump.
