Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov sign the visa exemption pact
Bangladesh and the Republic of Azerbaijan officially executed a bilateral visa exemption agreement in New York on Wednesday afternoon (September 23), exempting visa requirements for diplomatic, official, and service passport holders to facilitate seamless intergovernmental travel and diplomatic exchange.
Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov signed the treaty on behalf of their respective governments during a bilateral ceremony held on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a press communique.
The landmark accord enables accredited diplomats, civil service delegations, and government technical experts from both nations to enter, transit, and stay in each other's territory without requiring prior consular visas, removing bureaucratic bottlenecks in bilateral cooperation.
Detailing the diplomatic outcome in New York on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated, "The signing of this visa exemption agreement marks a significant leap in our expanding bilateral relations with Azerbaijan. It will streamline high-level diplomatic contacts, enhance economic diplomacy, and lay the foundation for broader commercial and energy partnerships between Dhaka and Baku."
The two foreign ministers also held discussions on expanding mutual investments, sharing technical expertise in fossil fuel exploration and renewable transition, and strengthening shared positions on sovereignty and international law within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the OIC.
