Bangladesh sent a total of 432,786 workers overseas for employment over a span of slightly more than seven months this year, while inward remittance inflows reached approximately $24.75 billion, marking an increase of $2.80 billion compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The figures were disclosed on Thursday (October 8) during the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, convened at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban under the chairmanship of committee chief A.K.M. Fazlul Haque Milon.
According to the official progress report submitted during the proceedings, between February 18 and September 30 this year, exactly 432,786 Bangladeshi workers secured overseas jobs across different global markets. Among the total departures, female migrant workers accounted for 36,590.
During the session, the parliamentary body underscored the imperative of safeguarding outgoing and returning expatriates from any form of negligence, harassment, or administrative delays at international airports, recommending stringent oversight mechanisms. The committee instructed ministry officials and staff to execute their responsibilities with heightened transparency and vigilance, leaving zero tolerance for irregularities or corrupt practices within overseas recruitment operations.
The meeting was also informed that amid escalating armed conflict across the Middle East, the Wage Earners' Welfare Board funded the successful repatriation of 186 stranded Bangladeshi nationals from Iran, including 12 women and 8 children. Addressing the private recruitment landscape, the ministry noted that there are currently 2,860 government-approved recruiting agencies in the country, of which 2,187 remain actively operational. Manpower mobilization continues to be channeled primarily through these accredited private agencies alongside state-run Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL).
The meeting was attended by committee member and Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, State Minister Md. Nurul Haque, and members Golam Mohammad Siraj, Md. Jashim Uddin, Rafiqul Islam Hilali, Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Md. Anwarul Islam, and Abul Kowser Mohammad Nazrul Islam, along with senior ministry officials.
