Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed
National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom remarked that the most degraded individuals in society often become members of parliament and ministers, while the most corrupt figures emerge as leaders.
Speaking as the chief guest at a reception organized by the Tazumuddin Upazila unit of the BNP and its associate organizations at the upazila parishad auditorium in Bhola on Wednesday afternoon (October 21), the Speaker stated that decent individuals currently lack the opportunity to contest elections and that a conducive environment for parliamentary politics has not been fostered. Expressing hope for reform, he said the nation has been liberated from the Awami League's misrule, voicing optimism that an upright and just society can be built moving forward.
During his address, the Speaker claimed that the British government has initiated moves to seize 400 houses belonging to former Awami League land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed following a formal communication from the Bangladesh government detailing their locations. He further alleged that the former minister amassed 100 properties in Dubai, around 50 in the United States, and 30 to 40 in Canada, asserting that these were acquired through laundered public wealth.
Highlighting the accumulation of wealth by Awami League leaders during their consecutive 17-year tenure, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed alleged that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her son own extensive assets across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Referring to illicit wealth stashed abroad, including in Canada's "Begum Para," the Speaker criticized political actors who built private fortunes by plundering the resources of ordinary citizens.
