The convoy carrying uranium on its way to Rooppur.
A fresh consignment of uranium—the nuclear fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP)—arrived at the project site in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna from Russia on Wednesday morning (October 21) under comprehensive security arrangements.
Ruhul Quddus, Site In-charge of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project, confirmed that the shipment represents the second consignment designated for the plant's second unit. Escorted by specialized security forces including the Bangladesh Army, police, Special Response Battalion (SRB), and intelligence agencies, the convoy departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 5:00 AM before safely arriving at the project site at approximately 10:30 AM. The convoy comprised three specialized lorries carrying the nuclear fuel, an auxiliary equipment transport, and a delegation of Russian technical specialists. Project authorities affirmed that the imported fuel will be stored inside the installation in strict compliance with international atomic safety protocols.
Project officials stated that nine additional consignments of nuclear fuel are scheduled to arrive from Russia across November and December to satisfy auxiliary fuel requirements for the first unit and facilitate commissioning of the second unit, following an earlier consignment received on October 3. Being implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission under the Ministry of Science and Technology with Russian technical and financial assistance, the mega-project features two 1,200 MW VVER units constructed by Rosatom subsidiary Atomstroyexport. If ongoing technical preparations proceed as planned, authorities anticipate feeding 200 to 300 MW of electricity from the country's first nuclear facility into the national grid on a trial basis by November.
