The parliamentary standing committee meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban
The production cost of one kilogram of beef currently stands at Tk 587.50, according to an official report submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The figures were presented during a committee meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (October 28), which reviewed the production costs, supply chain logistics, and market price stabilization measures for fish, meat, milk, and eggs.
The report also outlined estimated farmgate production costs for several other essential dietary staples. According to the data, the production cost of one kilogram of mutton stands at Tk 875, broiler chicken at Tk 161.55 per kg, Sonali chicken at Tk 253 per kg, and liquid milk at Tk 44.80 per kg. In addition, the production cost for an individual poultry egg was estimated at Tk 10.81.
During the discussions, committee members raised concerns that retail consumer prices in the open market remain abnormally elevated when compared directly to verified production expenditures. Addressing these concerns, officials noted that livestock farmers and primary producers are unable to access retail outlets directly, resulting in multiple intermediary handovers that drive up retail prices for end consumers. The committee emphasized the necessity of balancing consumer affordability while ensuring that grassroots farmers and rearers receive fair, remunerative prices.
In response to the market disparities, the parliamentary standing committee recommended stepped-up market intelligence and strict on-the-ground monitoring. It instructed the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to coordinate joint enforcement drives alongside the Ministry of Commerce, the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection (DNCRP), and related regulatory agencies to curb unjustified price hikes, excessive middlemen margins, artificial supply crunches, and distribution irregularities. Furthermore, the committee decided to finalize an integrated action strategy to stabilize the prices of day-old chicks and commercial eggs, while highlighting the need for a comprehensive framework to expand marine fisheries resources and boost export potential. The meeting was chaired by Committee Chairman Khairul Kabir Khokon, with Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Mohammad Aminur Rashid, State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku, and other committee members in attendance.
