Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in session
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has demanded a comprehensive list, including designations, of officials under the ministry's subordinate departments and agencies who were subjected to unethical forced retirement or denied legitimate promotions over the past 17 years. The watchdog also sought a detailed account of broadcast shows and programs cancelled during the same timeframe.
The directives were issued during the committee's second meeting of the 13th National Parliament, convened at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday (October 13). Chaired by committee chief Amanullah Aman, the session resolved that the compiled lists must be submitted at the committee's next meeting, according to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat.
During the deliberations, members urged Bangladesh Television (BTV) to abandon tendencies toward pure commercialization and operate strictly as a responsible public broadcaster committed to state and society. Committee members advised formulating a clear roadmap to prioritize the journalistic weight and relevance of news while enhancing the public appeal of BTV’s general programming.
Preserving national heritage formed another key agenda item. The committee recommended tasking the Bangladesh Film Archive with curating and preserving historical documents and documentaries from the 1971 War of Liberation, the 1990 Mass Uprising, and the recent July Mass Uprising. To bolster institutional transparency and accountability, the parliamentary body decided to conduct on-site inspection visits to both BTV and the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC). In addition, members called for heightened administrative vigilance to ensure that the Hindu community celebrates the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja safely and festively.
The meeting was attended by committee members including Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partho, State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury, Md. Ashraf Uddin Bokul, Mujibur Rahman, Nilofar Chowdhury Moni, Fahmida Haque, Md. Shafiqul Islam, and Mosammat Nazmun Nahar. The Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, heads of subordinate agencies, and senior parliamentary officials were also present.
