Commercial and trial transmission from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to Bangladesh's national power grid is scheduled to commence by November, officials confirmed during a parliamentary standing committee meeting on Wednesday (October 14).
The maiden meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Science and Technology, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, also set a timeline to complete fuel loading and reactor commissioning for the plant's second unit by June next year.
Project authorities noted that Rooppur features cutting-edge 'Generation III+' reactor technology, built strictly under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety protocols and international expert supervision. Energy specialists monitoring the mega-project affirmed that work is progressing satisfactorily within the targeted timeline.
Beyond power generation, the project framework includes expanding district-level nuclear medicine facilities and constructing Bangladesh's first dedicated marine research vessel.
The review meeting was attended by Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam, along with committee members AZM Rezwanul Haque, Md. Anwarul Islam, Mohammad Fahim Chowdhury, KM Babar, Sansila Zebrin, Salah Uddin, Mardia Momtaz, and Md. Abdul Gafur. Science and Technology Secretary Md. Anwar Hossain and senior project officials were also present.
